Is reflexology just a foot massage? No. Reflexology is an ancient non-invasive complementary therapy where pressure is applied to reflex points of the hands or feet that correspond to different body systems and organs. Stimulating these points can promote relaxation, improve circulation, reduce stress and improve overall wellbeing.
Reflexology can be traced back to 2330 BC ancient Egypt, as well as India and China. Reflexology as we know it today is attributed to Eunice Ingham who was an American therapist that mapped out reflex points which she believed through study corresponded to parts of the body. Different techniques are used to stimulate these reflex points - as it is a natural, non-invasive therapy, it is suitable for all ages from birth.
Reflexology is a relaxing complementary therapy that works well alongside conventional medicine. It is used around the world in a range of settings such as hospitals and hospices. Reflexology should not be used as a substitute for seeking out medical advice.
At your first appointment we will complete a consultation form together. This allows me to check for any contraindications, and tailor the treatment to what you need. We will discuss any aims that you may have and you can ask any questions that you may have. I will also discuss my data protection form and ask you to sign in agreement to this.
Please see subsequent treatments for what will happen for the rest of your treatment.
Following your appointment I will look over your form and my clinic notes to prepare a treatment plan tailored to your needs. This will be used in future treatments and reviewed when needed.
Your first appointment should last approximately 1 hour 15 minutes - taking into account the time taken completing the initial consultation form and any discussion following the treatment.
We will start by discussing how you felt following your previous treatment and talk about any changes in health or lifestyle and check what you are wanting from the treatment that day.
I will then ask you to remove your footwear and ask you to take a seat in my reclining chair, or if necessary, on my treatment couch. I will ensure that you feel comfortable with a choice of blankets, and optional eye mask. I have relaxing music playing, however this is optional.
I will then use hot cloths to cleanse your feet, this is when you start to relax. Once your feet are dried, I will offer you a choice of scented reflexology wax that I will then apply to your feet. This ensures that I have a good grip of your feet and to use various techniques effectively.
I encourage clients to relax and allow themselves to switch off for the time that they are with me. This does sometimes take them some practice! There may be times during your treatment that you wish to comment or ask a question, which is of course fine.
The treatment starts off with me using relaxation techniques to prepare your feet. I then move on to the reflexology session, noting down any imbalances or observations on my clinic notes.
After the treatment, you will have the opportunity to sit for a few moments with a glass of water. We will then discuss any feedback from the treatment.
Your appointment should last approximately 1 hour - taking into account the time taken completing the review form and any discussion before and after the treatment.
