Face & Ear

Reflexology

Reflexology is a non-invasive complementary therapy where pressure is applied to reflex points that correspond to different body systems and organs. The feet and hands are more widely known for receiving reflexology, but there are also points on the face and ears.

Stimulating these points can promote relaxation, improve circulation, soothe congestion, reduce stress and improve overall wellbeing.

Background of reflexology

Reflexology can be traced back to 2330 BC ancient Egypt, as well as India and China. Reflexology as we know it today is attributed to Eunice Ingham who was an American therapist that mapped out reflex points which she believed through study corresponded to parts of the body. Different techniques are used to stimulate these reflex points - as it is a natural, non-invasive therapy, it is suitable for all ages from birth.

Reflexology is a relaxing complementary therapy that works well alongside conventional medicine. It is used around the world in a range of settings such as hospitals and hospices. Reflexology should not be used as a substitute for seeking out medical advice.

What are the benefits

of face reflexology?

Facial reflexology aims to help your body and mind function at its best - with a positive side effect...a more radiant, glowing complexion!

Through various techniques used throughout a treatment, circulation is boosted and the lymphatic system is stimulated.

One of the main benefits to facial reflexology is that it aims to relieve the effects of stress. Reflexology helps open up the neural pathway, assisting in the control of stress levels. It can have an analgesic effect, reducing pain by releasing endorphins into the body.

Other benefits to facial reflexology:

  • relieves tension in muscle tissue
  • calms and clears the mind, improving concentration
  • helps relieve sinusitis and congestion
  • soothes headaches
  • helps to relax the jaw
  • brings about a feeling of calmness and relaxation

What are the benefits

of ear reflexology?

Ear or auricular reflexology also aims to help your body and mind function at its best - and can be a short treatment and fast acting.

The ear reflexology that I use is made up from both Eastern and Western theories; Eastern theory suggests stimulation reduces blockages and congestion of acupuncture meridians, Western theory suggests stimulation reduces blockages and congestion in nerve endings.

It is believed that these blockages prevent the flow of bioelectric current through the nerves, which causes impulses to not reach organs, glands and body structures which can cause issues with certain parts of the body.

The stimulation of the ear reflex points has a direct connection to the corresponding parts of the body.

I have a number of protocols that can be used to support various concerns, from aches and pains, insomnia, anxiety, allergies, neurological disorders, gastro issues, reproductive concerns...

Benefits to ear reflexology:

  • muscle relaxation
  • pain reduction or elimination
  • improved circulation
  • helps the removal of toxins
  • better body function
  • calms and clears the mind, improving concentration
  • brings about a feeling of calmness and relaxation

What happens at my first treatment?

At your first appointment we will complete a consultation form together. This allows me to check for any contraindications, and tailor the treatment to what you need. We will discuss any aims that you may have and you can ask any questions that you may have. I will also discuss my data protection form and ask you to sign in agreement to this.

Please see subsequent treatments for what will happen for the rest of your treatment.

Following your appointment I will look over your form and my clinic notes to prepare a treatment plan tailored to your needs. This will be used in future treatments and reviewed when needed.

Your first appointment should last approximately 1 hour 15 minutes (face) or 45mins (ears) - taking into account the time taken completing the initial consultation form and any discussion following the treatment.

What happens during following treatments?

We will start by discussing how you felt following your previous treatment and talk about any changes in health or lifestyle and check what you are wanting from the treatment that day.

I will then ask you to remove your footwear and any jewellery that may need to be taken out (where possible) and ask you to take a seat in my reclining chair, or on my treatment couch. I will ensure that you feel comfortable with a choice of blankets, I have relaxing music playing, however this is optional.

We will begin with some breathing and grounding to help you to begin to relax.

For face reflexology I will use a gentle cleanser and hot cloth to cleanse your face. I will then apply some facial oil made especially for face reflexology.

I use various techniques for face reflexology, covering the different reflexes and zones of the face - including the use of some beautiful cooling crystal tools (optional).

For ear reflexology, I use techniques to stimulate the various points of the ear, treating both ears at the same time.

I encourage clients to relax and allow themselves to switch off for the time that they are with me. There may be times during your treatment that you wish to comment or ask a question, which is of course fine.

After the treatment, you will have the opportunity to sit for a few moments with a glass of water. We will then discuss any feedback from the treatment.

Your appointment should last approximately 1 hour (feet) or 30mins (hands) - taking into account the time taken completing the review form and any discussion before and after the treatment.

How might I feel

following my treatment?

Following your appointment you should feel relaxed! Reflexology is a really relaxing treatment and many clients leave the room saying that feel lighter, brighter and almost as though they have been reset.

It is a great way to ensure that you are getting some time to yourself.

Always aim to drink more water following treatments and try to take it easy where possible.
